NHAI Rolls Out New AI Highway Monitoring Tech Across India!

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to deploy AI powered dashcam analytics across nearly 40,000 km of national highways to improve operations and maintenance. The system will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to monitor road conditions and identify defects through high resolution video and imagery.

Dashboard cameras installed on Route Patrol Vehicles will conduct weekly surveys of highway stretches. AI models will automatically detect more than 30 types of issues, including potholes, rutting, severe cracks, damaged lane markings, faulty streetlights, and crash barrier damage.

The system will also track safety concerns such as illegal median openings, unauthorized signboards, encroachments, and improper parking. Night surveys will be conducted monthly to evaluate road signage, pavement markings, road studs, and highway lighting.

To manage the data, NHAI will operate five monitoring zones supported by a dedicated IT platform with analytics and visualization dashboards. The results will also be integrated into the NHAI data platform to track maintenance progress and ensure faster repairs, improving highway safety and management nationwide.
