India has achieved a major infrastructure milestone with the completion of its first eight-lane extradosed cable-stayed bridge over the Narmada River. Spanning 2.22 km on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, this ₹817 crore engineering feat is designed to endure high seismic activity and strong tidal currents with foundations reaching 60 meters deep.

The structure is a massive undertaking, utilizing 32,000 metric tons of steel. roughly 2.5 times the amount used in the Brooklyn Bridge, and specialized stay cables imported from Germany.

Despite facing severe setbacks, including multiple floods and lockdown-related disruptions, construction teams successfully completed the project to bridge the nation’s political and financial hubs.

Once the expressway is fully operational, travel time between Delhi and Mumbai will drop to just 12 hours, significantly boosting logistics and economic growth across industrial corridors like Bharuch and Ankleshwar. This landmark project stands as a testament to India’s growing capability to execute world-class, complex infrastructure.
