Starting April 10, 2026, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will officially discontinue all cash transactions at national highway toll plazas to eliminate congestion and streamline traffic flow.
Under this new digital-only mandate, vehicles without a valid FASTag must pay 1.25 times the standard toll fee via UPI to pass. Failure to pay digitally may lead to vehicle removal under Rule 14 or the issuance of an e-notice for unpaid dues; owners have a 72-hour grace period to pay the base fee before the charge doubles, with persistent defaults eventually being flagged in the VAHAN database.
To further encourage the transition toward a barrier-free Multi-Lane Free-Flow (MLFF) system, NHAI has also introduced a revised FASTag Annual Pass for private cars at ₹3,075, allowing up to 200 crossings per year while ensuring that toll exemptions remain strictly tied to specific offices rather than individuals.
