Government to Free Spectrum for Road Safety Tech in India

To improve road safety, the telecom department will de-license the 5.875–5.925 GHz spectrum band next month to reduce crashes caused by wrong-way driving, blind curves, and poorly marked construction zones. The spectrum will be open for all stakeholders under pre-prescribed conditions, enabling Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication systems.

These technologies allow vehicles to detect nearby traffic and receive alerts from road infrastructure like signals and barricades. Norms for V2V are expected by December, with automakers already preparing integration. The Supreme Committee on Road Safety has asked stakeholders to roll out solutions within six months.
