New Plan Could Standardise Speed Limits on National Highways

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed giving the Centre the authority to set speed limits on National Highways and expressways.

At present, the ministry notifies maximum speed limits, but state governments and local police often lower them on certain stretches, particularly in urban areas, which creates compliance issues for motorists.

To address this, the ministry has proposed amendments to Sections 112 and 113 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The changes would allow the Centre to regulate speed limits on national highways, while states would continue to set limits for roads within their jurisdiction.
