Samruddhi Highway to Get High Tech Safety Network After Rising Accidents

The Samruddhi Highway will partially roll out an Intelligent Transportation System next month to help curb accidents, following 233 fatalities recorded on the corridor over the past two years.

The system will include a Video Incident Detection and Enforcement System (VIDES) at 10 km intervals for speed monitoring and automatic penalties, Vehicle Actuated Speed Displays (VASD) every 20 km to help drivers track speed, and Variable Message Signs (VMS) at entry and exit points and near black spots to alert motorists. Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) cameras will also be installed at 1 km intervals to detect wrong lane driving and illegal parking.

Alongside this, the government has engaged police and Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials to counsel drivers and conduct checks on driving licences and fire fighting equipment in vehicles. Construction of 15 Highway Police Centres is underway, interceptor vehicles are being deployed to track overspeeding, and safety infrastructure such as signage, speed limit markers, lane markers, cat’s eyes and rumble strips has been installed. The MSRDC has deployed 192 security guards and 15 patrol vehicles for highway security. Highway police centres and patrol vehicles will strengthen enforcement.
