Smartcard for public transport in Mumbai

The government is keen on expediting the launch of the integrated ticketing system (ITS) in Mumbai, which means commuters can carry a single smartcard to travel by BEST buses, Metro and monorail in the near future.

The all-in-one card will enable citizens and tourists to choose any mode of transport and travel with convenience.

The ITS, if implemented, will benefit close to five million passengers. At present, nearly four million people travel by BEST buses while three lakh commute by the Mumbai Metro daily. The Central Railway and Western Railway also ferry close to 7.5 million passengers
everyday. The monorail is expected to ferry lakhs of commuters once the Wadala-Jacob Circle stretch is completed.
