CRRI Partners AMNS to Turn Mining Waste into Roads

The CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) has signed a research and development pact with ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS India) to explore the use of iron ore tailings in road construction, supporting greener infrastructure and circular economy practices in India.

India produces about 18 to 20 million tonnes of such tailings each year and typically stored in large dams, creating environmental and economic challenges due the massive volumes generated.

According to N. Kalaiselvi, director general of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, using iron ore tailings in road construction could help transform mining waste into materials for green roads.
