Thane Municipal Transport plans to deploy AI to optimize its bus fleet, improve capacity, and boost revenue in 2026–27. Despite rising passenger demand, fleet size has remained limited, leading to overcrowding, delays, and inefficient scheduling.
The system will use Intelligent Traffic Management to track buses, analyse ticket demand, and dynamically adjust routes and frequency, reducing losses from underutilised services. Officials said congestion and poor road conditions have also impacted operations and vehicle availability.
To strengthen capacity, around 100 air-conditioned electric buses will be inducted under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme in 2026–27. Additionally, tenders are underway for 110 more AC e-buses, including 10 double-deckers, along with 160 buses under NCAP grants, taking total planned additions to over 360 buses.
