In a major step toward strengthening emergency care, the Government has launched the PM RAHAT (Road Accident Victim Hospitalization and Assured Treatment) Scheme to ensure that accident victims receive timely and cashless medical support. The initiative reflects a citizen-first approach focused on saving lives, particularly during the critical “Golden Hour,” when immediate treatment can prevent nearly half of accident-related deaths.
Under the scheme, eligible road accident victims will receive cashless treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh per person for a period of seven days from the date of the accident. Stabilization care will be provided for up to 24 hours in non-life-threatening cases and up to 48 hours in life-threatening situations, subject to
police verification through a digital system.
The scheme is integrated with the ERSS 112 helpline, allowing victims, Good Samaritans, or bystanders to quickly locate the nearest designated hospital and request ambulance assistance. A technology-driven framework connects accident reporting, hospital admission, police authentication, treatment, and claim
processing for smooth coordination.
Hospitals will be reimbursed through the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund and insurance companies, with claims processed within 10 days. A district-level grievance system will ensure accountability and timely resolution. PM RAHAT aims to ensure that no life is lost due to financial constraints or delayed medical care.
