BMC to allow locals to park on road

A new parking policy envisaged by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporatoin (BMC) plans on giving permits to local residents to park their vehicles on the city roads. The BMC is in the process of compiling a list of roads where residents can park vehicles on one side of the road. Residents will be issued annual parking permits, allowing them to park their vehicles at these spots, with nobody else being allowed to park on these spots. Barcodes on the permits would allow the traffic police identify cases of illegal parking. The new policy also provides for area based parking rates in the city?s public parking lots, depending on the demand for parking in the area. The Corporation has also approved 32 new public parking lots under the new policy, thereby creating space for 30,00 more vehicles. The existing parking lots accommodate only about 10,314 vehicles
