The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved the construction of a र30 billion road project to construct ring roads to reduce traffic congestion and provide commuters with alternative routes. In the first phase of the project a 34.72km road will be built in Srinagar, the state capital, The road will have four lanes initially, which can be expanded to six lanes. The second phase of the project, estimated to cost र4.48 billion, will see the construction of a 27.3km road, starting at Narbal and touching the national highway in Ganderbal. The road will have 135 culverts, five major junctions and nine minor junctions. Jammu will have a 60km four-lane ring road under the project. The road will start near Vijaypur and connect with the highway at Akhnoor, and on to Nagrota Bye-Pass. The first phase includes construction of a 43km road while in the second phase a 16.9km road will be built.
