Karnataka gets financial aid for upgrading highways

For major overhauling of Karnataka’s highway system, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of $315m to the state. This is part of the $463m state highway improvement project which includes the upgrading of 600km of the state’s highways. It is also for support for betterment of road planning, maintenance, safety and operation.

Under the project to be carried out by the state’s Public Works Department, current roads will be expanded into two lanes, existing culverts and bridges will be strengthened, bypasses will be constructed and new road bridges, rail over bridges and cross-drainage structures will be built. It is expected to be completed by December 2014.
