Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made it mandatory for cinema hall management to screen a few short films on road safety before showing the feature films. The three-minute films on various subjects dealing with road safety are made by the Indian chapter of International Road Federation (IRF), a Geneva-based forum that advocates better and safer roads, and NDTV. To be produced in 12 languages, the films will be used for nationwide promotion of road safety through television media across several channels.
The chief secretaries of all the states have been told to execute this decision. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has also asked the states to utilise important locations like government buildings, railway stations, bus stations and airports for displaying hoardings on road safety rules.
One of the films, Ehsaas is on drunken driving while Afsos is on shifting accident victims to a hospital by anyone without any fear of police harassment. The latter is based on a Supreme Court directive.
