Dushyant Deshpande, Managing Director of Skytoll Pvt Ltd shared his perspective with TrafficInfraTech on the transformative potential of technology within India’s mobility sector. He discussed how innovative solutions can enhance barrier-less tolling, improve traffic management, and boost road safety. Highlighting the significance of platforms like the TrafficInfraTech Expo, Deshpande emphasised the pivotal role that innovation will play in shaping the nation’s future mobility ecosystem.
Building Smart Mobility Solutions: The Role of Technology and Standardization
India’s younger generation is quick to adopt emerging technologies and create homegrown solutions tailored to local needs. Standardisation is crucial for the successful implementation of these advancements. With India currently facing the highest road fatalities globally, he stressed that safety must remain the foremost priority as new systems are developed. The Minister for Road Transport and Highways has underscored the urgent need to reduce road accidents.
Safety begins with thoughtful road design, continues through the standardisation of equipment used in traffic management, tolling, and enforcement, and ultimately depends on responsible road user behaviour. Across all these pillars, Skytoll leverages over fifteen years of global experience to create solutions that cater specifically to India’s unique requirements. It is through these contributions that the company aims to support the country’s vision for smart mobility.

Critical Areas for Barrier-less Tolling Implementation
City entry points are the most crucial locations for the deployment of barrier-less tolling systems. These areas often experience severe traffic congestion due to existing physical barriers, making them a priority for intervention. He referenced the recent initiative by IHMCL to invite bids for the Dwarka Expressway and UER-II, describing it as a positive development. Furthermore, entry points to all major cities — especially the four major metros — require immediate attention due to their high vehicular density and traffic volumes. The implementation of barrier-less tolling at these locations promises to reduce congestion and decrease the carbon footprint caused by vehicles idling in traffic.
Expanding Technology Application Beyond Urban Roads
Beyond highways and city roads, the unique challenges are faced in India’s hilly regions, where most roads are only two lanes. The routes such as the Char Dham Yatra, which experience heavy pilgrim influx during special events, are areas in need of effective traffic management. Skytoll plans to deploy enforcement systems that monitor traffic behaviour and alert authorities to potential disruptions in these regions. Additionally, the company intends to prioritise black spots, or locations identified as highly vulnerable, by introducing innovative solutions and enforcement systems to help authorities manage traffic and enhance safety.
India’s shift towards advanced tolling: experiences and commitment
While Skytoll has been registered in India for three years, its active role in the transition towards barrier-less tolling systems has been particularly rewarding. The previous year allowed Skytoll to engage with stakeholders and gain a deeper understanding of the government’s vision. This year, the company is witnessing the Honourable Prime Minister’s initiatives being put into practice, which adds greater excitement to their mission. The Company remains committed to supporting the Make in India movement and contributing to the nation’s aspiration of becoming a developed country.
