AI interceptors for traffic cops

Traditional interceptors and methods of tracking speeding vehicles, which flashed numbers on a screen while traffic police scrambled to catch violators, can likely become obsolete with the introduction of AI-based interceptors which will not just issue challans, but will also detect multiple traffic offences in real time. With the advent of the AI-powered 4D Radar Interceptor, Delhi traffic police aim to make this entire process automated. The interceptor can identify various traffic violations, including speeding, driving without a seatbelt, mobile phone usage while driving, riding without a helmet, triple riding on a two-wheeler, pillion rider without protective headgear, and fancy or designer number plates.

By integrating directly with National Informatics Centre (NIC), the interceptor generates e-challans on the spot without the need for manual intervention. The tech consists of 360-degree rotatable ANPR cameras, mounted on the interceptor’s roof; these cameras provide a panoramic view, capturing number plates and tracking traffic movement. Officials state that, unlike traditional systems, the interceptor’s 4D radar uses advanced radio wave technology to simultaneously track multiple vehicles. It measures vehicle speed with pinpoint accuracy, ensuring no violator goes unnoticed.
