UP plans Delhi-Meerut Rapid Transit System

In a bid to reduce congestion on the Delhi-Meerut sector, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning to build a Rapid Transit System. The project, which is estimated to cost about 16,592 crore would be about 90km long with 9.7km in Delhi, and the rest in Uttar Pradesh. When completed, it would save fuel, reduce pollution and accidents, besides saving commuting time and running costs of vehicles. The UP State Housing Department will examine the viability of the project. If found feasible and approved, the project is expected to be ready by 2016 and would benefit around 5.7 lakh commuters a day. The RTS is a part of the greater NCR Regional Rapid Transport Transit system covering Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan.
