The West Bengal government is considering introducing a linked transport network for Kolkata which would revive a popular transport network, discontinued many years ago. The plan also involves integrating water transport into the network, and would give city commuters a mix of travel options such as metro trains, buses and water taxis to reach their destinations. Metro commuters who take a bus or auto rickshaw to reach their final destinations would be the most benefited.
Passengers can board a vessel and travel to the jetty nearest to their destination. From there they can either board a bus or use any other mode of transport to reach their final destination. Six water taxis have already been launched to serve commuters living around water bodies. Long distance ferries will also be introduced along the Hooghly river to provide relief to passengers travelling in overcrowded buses.
