In a bid to maintain the high standard of cleanliness at Delhi Metro, the Metro has been imposing fines on commuters spitting at the Metro station. The initiative to collect fines was prompted by the fact that repeated attempts by Metro authorities to dissuade commuters to not spit by putting up display boards and making announcements did not bear fruit. More than 17,000 passengers have been fined over the past two years with the fines amounting to over र36 lakhs. Commuters entering the coaches reserved for women are also fined.
