Government to construct 1,000km expressway

Government will construct 1,000 km of expressways under its flagship road building programme NHDP at a cost of Rs 16,680Cr. The main criteria for selection of expressway corridors will be the traffic volume. The decision to give top priority to the highest density corridor, i.e., the Vadodara-Mumbai Corridor (400km) and considering it for the feasibility study was approved in the Parliament.

It was also decided that the remaining 600km will be selected out of the routes identified on the basis of traffic volume. Out of 66km length of Delhi- Meerut Expressway, 30.63 km has already been awarded in two packages and contract agreement is executed. In addition, the government has approved the decision to take up one more expressway – Eastern Peripheral Expressway – for a length of 135 km in six packages.
