Railways to set up own nuclear plants

Faced with a rising demand of energy for its operations, Indian Railways is planning to set up captive nuclear plants. The states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are being considered at present as likely locations for the plants. The Railways has initiated discussions with the Nuclear Power Corporation (NPC) for the purpose. The Railways operates trains on a total of 65,000 km out of which 23,541 km have been electrified. It operates about 42,000 electrical locomotives on these routes. Last fiscal it spent about ? 8000 crore on its electricity bill and ? 15,000 crore on diesel.
